I have been breeding high-quality Labrador Retrievers since 1991. My breeding program adheres to the highest standards of Labrador breeding, with the goal of producing Labradors that not only meet or exceed AKC breed standards but also maximizing the probability of producing healthy and well-tempered companion dogs. To achieve these goals, I incorporate all of the key health clearances on both the dam and sire. These include assessment by X-ray of both hips and elbows of the parents by the canine Orthopedic Foundation of America (OFA) to detect and prevent potential for hip or elbow dysplasia in puppies. In addition, I have my bitches evaluated annually by an ophthalmic veterinarian to detect potential for transmission of inherited eye diseases. I have also begun using the available genetic testing (Optigen) to detect the inherited eye disease, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). The results of these examinations are submitted to the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF). I require these same health clearances for all of the potential stud dogs that I use. Beyond these measures, I also carefully select the appropriate stud dog for a given bitch in my breeding program, taking into account the appropriate degree of inbreeding and out-crossing, and any potential health issues that I am aware of in the ancestors of the stud dog as well as any health issues that are apparent for the progeny of that stud dog. In addition to these pre-breeding measures, I also include a comprehensive socialization program for my puppies while they are in my possession. This includes a great deal of socialization with people (adults and children) as well as with my adult dogs. The puppies are also placed on a carefully controlled, high-quality diet, are carefully examined by a veterinarian and receive all appropriate immunizations and health clearances. I am also a licensed kennel in Pennsylvania and am inspected annually.
